My father, Hal Juniper, was deeply involved with the Hunters Hill Bowling Club, and I joined as a Social Member in 1977. Although I wasn’t initially interested in bowls,I enjoyed the social atmosphere.
When my father became ill in 1984,I joined as a bowling member to spend time with him.
I’m grateful to have played a few games with him before he passed away.

Dad had been a member for nearly 40 years, and I grew up familiar with the club. Having lived in Hunters Hill most of my life, the club was a convenient and welcoming place to socialise.
Can you share a memorable moment from your time at the club?
The most significant change came in 1989 when the club, then a male-only institution, opened up to the community. This led to a major transformation, including a renovation, new facilities, and the inclusion of women. It’s now a thriving, multi-purpose club that celebrates 125 years of community.

Lawn bowls is a simple sport but hard to master. I enjoy the challenge of improving my game, adapting to the changing conditions of the green, and, most of all, the social aspect. You can enjoy a game and a drink while making new friends.

I’d say, "Don’t hesitate! Join in and you won’t regret it!" The small-scale nature of the club makes it easy to get to know people, and bowls is a great way to meet others and have fun.
How have you seen the club evolve?
The Hunters Hill Club has transformed from a single-purpose male-dominated bowling club into a vibrant, multi-faceted community hub. It now offers men’s and women’s bowling, tennis, popular bistro ,and more ensuring its future viability.
What do you think is the future of lawn bowls at Hunters Hill Club? Despite the challenges of maintaining bowling greens, the future of lawn bowls at the club looks promising. With increased membership from clubs closing nearby, the HHC has become a strong, vibrant organisation with a growing participation in the sport.
What advice would you give to newer members or those just starting out?
I’d advise new members to dive right in, start playing social bowls, and take coaching sessions. It’s a great way to learn and meet others. The club offers plenty of opportunities for growth in both casual and competitive bowls.
Looking back, what are you most proud of? I’m most proud of winning the Club Major Singles Championship four times and receiving Life Membership of the club, which was awarded to me last year.
